Statement attributable to Luis Guardia, President, Food Research & Action Center (FRAC)

WASHINGTON, November 18, 2022 — The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) congratulates Nancy Pelosi on a historic tenure as Speaker of the House and celebrates her unwavering commitment to end hunger in America.

Throughout her tenure as Speaker, Pelosi has been a fierce champion of the federal nutrition programs. She protected and strengthened the structural integrity of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), school meals, and the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), which allowed them to respond timely and effectively when need increased during COVID-19. She built on that solid foundation by shepherding landmark legislation to further bolster the programs’ positive impacts. As a result, millions of struggling households were able to access the nutrition they needed. If not for these interventions, the spikes in hunger during the pandemic would have been far worse.

In addition, Speaker Pelosi played a key role in efforts to strengthen and invest in nutrition, the Child Tax Credit, and other proven anti-poverty programs that promote the financial security, health and well-being of children and families.

FRAC and our network of anti-hunger advocates all across the country are indebted to the Speaker for her leadership, service, and perseverance in the fight against hunger.
