WASHINGTON, December 14, 2021 — The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) is proud to announce Andrew Cheyne has been named Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Deputy Director at the leading national nonprofit organization working to eradicate poverty-related hunger and undernutrition in the United States.
“We warmly welcome Andrew to the team and look forward to working closely with him as we look ahead to the new year,” said FRAC President Luis Guardia. “Andrew has been a long-time champion of SNAP and other federal nutrition programs. We are delighted to have his experience and deep passion for helping others in need.”
In his role, Cheyne will work with FRAC SNAP Director Ellen Vollinger on strategies to improve SNAP benefit access and adequacy for low-income individuals across the country.
“As the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Andrew’s contributions will prove crucial to FRAC on efforts to promote food purchasing power and dignity for SNAP participants,” Vollinger said.
Prior to joining FRAC, Cheyne served as the Director of Government Affairs for the California Association of Food Banks (CAFB), where he oversaw state and federal policy agenda to address hunger and poverty, played key roles in the historic expansion of SNAP to Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries and Healthy School Meals for All, partnered with a wide array of stakeholders, and expanded the capacity of food banks, agencies, and clients with lived experience to lead anti-hunger advocacy.
“I am thrilled to be part of the FRAC team. My career has been spent in the anti-hunger and anti-poverty space, and I look forward to continuing that tradition by providing expertise on how SNAP can best bolster food security, health, and well-being; serve customers with dignity; and make positive impacts for a robust and equitable economy,” said Cheyne.
Cheyne previously directed the research program at the Berkeley Media Studies Group, a leading media advocacy organization that assists public health advocates to achieve policy victories.
Andrew holds a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego, and a bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Northwestern University.
