The Food Research & Action Center Stands in Solidarity
With Those Fighting Systemic Racism

Statement attributable to Luis Guardia, president, FRAC

WASHINGTON, June 2, 2020 —The events that have culminated in the recent uprisings across the country are a stark reminder of the critical proactive work that is needed to create fundamental change for a more just society.

George Floyd’s death was a horrific display of brutality, and what happened in Central Park to Christian Cooper — while less violent — was also a horrific display of privilege. These events have come on the heels of the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, which are only the latest examples of our nation’s history of killing Black people. All of this is happening with the backdrop of mounting pressures of staggering unemployment and growing food insecurity in the wake of COVID-19.

These challenges are serious. If we are to ensure no one goes hungry in this country, we must address the systemic racism that perpetuates and exacerbates poverty, the root cause of hunger. There is no excuse for anyone in this wealthy country to struggle to put food on the table, let alone any reason that African American and Latinx households should experience two to three times the rate of food insecurity.

As we have done for 50 years, FRAC will continue to work every day to end hunger in the U.S. and to ensure that everyone, no matter who they are or where they live, have access to the same opportunities for good health, education, and economic security. In addition, we will ensure that we continue to do this work with a lens that encompasses racial equity.

We are proud to work with many great national organizations and a devoted and passionate network of thousands of state- and community-based organizations that are allied with us in the pursuit of greater justice for the most vulnerable and disenfranchised. We are proud to be a part of the anti-hunger community, and pledge to stand in solidarity with them as we fight for justice.
