This interactive map, produced in collaboration with the AARP Foundation, shows the share of all households with older adults (age 60+) in each state that participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at the state, metropolitan, small town, and rural levels.1

Nationally, 5.3 million households with older adults benefited from SNAP in FY 20192. In every state of our nation, SNAP matters to older adults, whether they live in the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Mountain Plains, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, or West region.

Note: FRAC analysis of 5-year American Community Survey data (2015-2019), in collaboration with the AARP Foundation.

1"Metro counties" are those contained within Metropolitan Statistical Areas, as delineated by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB); each of which contains at least one Census Bureau-delineated urbanized area of 50,000 or more people. "Small town counties" are those contained within Micropolitan Statistical Areas, as delineated by OMB, each containing at least one Census Bureau-delineated urban cluster of between 10,000 and 50,000 people. "Rural counties" consist of non-metropolitan and non-micropolitan areas. Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia have no counties defined as "small town" or "rural". Connecticut and Hawaii have no counties defined as "rural". Margins of error were calculated based on a 90% confidence level.
