USDA ANNOUNCES $6 MILLION IN FOOD STAMP PROGRAM GRANTS TO IMPROVE ACCESS, OUTREACH

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $6 million in two grant competitions to improve access to and outreach for the Food Stamp Program. The first set of grants, authorized by the 2002 Farm Bill, will award a total of $5 million for projects aimed at simplifying the food stamp application and eligibility systems or improving access to food stamp benefits by eligible households. These grants will be made available to state and local government agencies and private non-profit organizations; at least $1 million of the $5 million in grants will go to a partnership between a state agency and one or more private non-profit organizations. The second set of grants, totaling $1 million will be awarded to small community and faith-based organizations to conduct food stamp outreach to potential program participants. The grants are part of an effort "to make it easier for the working poor, immigrants and elderly to access food stamp benefits."
