FRAC engages in research, analysis, training, technical assistance, advocacy, and public education to improve public nutrition programs and broaden their reach. Current Openings and General Internship Information SNAP/Food Stamp Policy and Outreach Fellow The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) seeks a highly motivated individual for a one-year fellowship to carry out policy analysis, research, public education, outreach and advocacy to maximize Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/Food Stamp participation among and benefits for needy people. The fellow will particularly conduct research analysis and undertake activities with national state and local partners to assist more needy people in accessing SNAP/Food Stamps during the current economic crisis. FRAC works to alleviate hunger and improve nutrition for low-income people in the United States, primarily by analyzing the causes and effects of hunger and poor nutrition and ensuring that federal nutrition assistance programs, refundable tax credits and other supports effectively serve low-income Americans. The Food Stamp Program serves more than 31 million Americans but could reach even more eligible people. Pursuant to the 2008 Farm Bill, this federal program was renamed SNAP. Responsibilities: Develop policy analysis and proposals, outreach approaches and advocacy strategies for maximizing SNAP benefits for low-income people; provide technical assistance on SNAP rules, operations and best practices, including to state-based anti-hunger groups and allies; analyze national, state and local SNAP participation data; keep abreast of research on SNAP access and operations; research and write reports and policy briefs, as well as materials for the website, e-newsletters and other communications for effective dissemination of information to FRAC's network and the broader public. Qualifications: Bachelors degree. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Commitment to working for social justice. Facility with word processing systems, spreadsheets, and statistical software preferred. Knowledge of the federal nutrition programs and an understanding of hunger and poverty and their impact on communities preferred. General Internship Information FRAC offers a variety of internship possibilities throughout the year. The number of internships available at any given time fluctuates. FRAC interns work as volunteers or with the support of third party funding sources, such as work study programs. We will be happy to assist you in getting academic credit for your internship. Interns work directly with policy and development staff and are assigned to specific projects. Our staff considers mentoring an important part of any internship program. Intern tasks have included working with FRAC's state and local grassroots network, engaging in research and information analysis, working with Congressional policymakers, attending Congressional hearings, assisting in the production and release of FRAC's special reports, and assisting with the organization's fundraising and development activities. Students with a strong commitment to public interest and anti-poverty issues are encouraged to apply.
