Chief of Staff, FRAC

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) is the leading national organization working to improve public policy to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition in the United States. FRAC engages in advocacy, research, policy development, coalition-building, training, technical assistance, and public education to improve public nutrition programs and economic security programs and to broaden their reach.

For 39 years FRAC has led the efforts to create, increase participation in, and protect and improve the food stamp program (now renamed “SNAP”), school breakfast and lunch programs, the summer food program, WIC, afterschool and child care food programs, and other key nutrition and income supports for low-income people in the U.S. FRAC works with a large and active nationwide network of anti-hunger and anti-poverty advocates, as well as its own initiatives in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

FRAC’s current priorities include assuring that the nation’s nutrition programs respond effectively to the increased hunger and economic insecurity created by the national recession, leading the efforts to pursue President Obama’s goal of ending childhood hunger in the U.S. by 2015, and assuring that low-income people in the U.S. receive not just adequate food but healthy nutrition.

Position Description

FRAC seeks an experienced advocate, communicator and manager to bring the anti-hunger efforts of this growing organization to a new level of effectiveness. In particular, the Chief of Staff will:

  • Share with FRAC’s President and management team ongoing responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, fiscal and administrative strength of the organization.
  • Ensure coordination across programs on an ongoing basis.
  • Oversee the strengthening and ongoing effectiveness of FRAC’s communications and field capacities, and FRAC’s Campaign to End Childhood Hunger.

The Chief of Staff will report to FRAC’s President and work closely with FRAC’s Board.

Responsibilities

  • Manage internal institutional health: effectiveness, productivity and spirit of the staff; efficient and effective management of human and financial resources; development of workplans and budgets; and effective inter-departmental initiatives.
  • Share with FRAC’s President the management of the long-term functioning and strengthening of the organization, ensuring programs, initiatives and strategies are effectively implemented, work is coordinated and cross-divisional activities are effectively carried-out.
  • With FRAC’s President, work closely with the Board and its committees, prepare for Board meetings and carry out Board decisions.
  • Working with FRAC’s President and senior staff, approve and manage significant shifting of priorities, reallocation of budget or staff resources, addition of new goals or projects, and phasing out of old ones.
  • Ensure consistency between fundraising goals, institutional plans, and priorities; with the President, oversee the fiscal health of the institution.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum ten years experience in non-profit or comparable work.
  • Extensive management experience and ability to strengthen skills of other managers.
  • Experience in anti-hunger or anti-poverty work preferred.
  • Experience working with extensive field network preferred.
  • Ability to lead and inspire staff in collaborative efforts.
  • Good conceptual, strategic thinking and creative skills.
  • Commitment to social justice work.
  • Strong verbal, editing, writing and organizational skills; ability to make effective presentations to public forums, the media and funders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and manage teams.
  • Experience working in a collegial environment; experience working with diverse communities and demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Field Organizer, FRAC

Position Description

FRAC seeks an experienced organizer and advocate to expand and strengthen the organization’s field work. In particular, the Field Organizer will:

  • Assist state and local anti-hunger groups in strengthening their capacity and advocacy.
  • Act as a liaison between state and local groups in FRAC’s network and FRAC’s national staff in order to enhance the effectiveness of both state/local work and national work.
  • Strengthen FRAC’s capacity to generate grass roots lobbying on federal legislative and administrative issues.

This position will report to FRAC’s President (initially) and then to the Chief of Staff.

Responsibilities

  • Develop creative grassroots advocacy campaigns and strategies, including strategies to meet the President’s goal of ending childhood hunger by 2015.
  • Strengthen the grass roots and grass tops anti-hunger presence in target states.
  • Broker relationships and requests for support between FRAC’s national staff and state and local groups on both national advocacy and state and local advocacy.
  • Expand on-line organizing strategies.
  • Build FRAC’s lists of grass roots contacts and advocates.
  • Help develop alerts and other materials designed to support and engage network members.
  • Assist in managing FRAC’s program of grants to state and local organizations.
  • Assist with fundraising when appropriate.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum two years experience in organizing and field work. Preference will be given to individuals with both national and state experience.
  • Experience in anti-hunger or anti-poverty work preferred.
  • Experience with new technologies.
  • Strong verbal, written and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with teams.
  • Good conceptual, strategic thinking and creative skills.
  • Commitment to social justice work.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and/or demonstrated commitment to diversity.
  • Willingness to travel; driver’s license.

General Internship Information

FRAC offers a variety of internship possibilities throughout the year. The number of internships available at any given time fluctuates. FRAC interns work as volunteers or with the support of third party funding sources, such as work study programs. We will be happy to assist you in getting academic credit for your internship.

Interns work directly with policy and development staff and are assigned to specific projects. Our staff considers mentoring an important part of any internship program.

Intern tasks have included working with FRAC's state and local grassroots network, engaging in research and information analysis, working with Congressional policymakers, attending Congressional hearings, assisting in the production and release of FRAC's special reports, and assisting with the organization's fundraising and development activities.

Students with a strong commitment to public interest and anti-poverty issues are encouraged to apply. Other requirements include solid research, writing and communications skills, computer literacy and interest in/knowledge of the political process.
