FRAC: Take Action on FY 2008 Budget

	Elementary and Secondary Education Act
	The Elementary and Secondary Act — also known as ESEA or No Child Left Behind — is the federal government’s largest investment in K-12 education. Title I of ESEA targets more than $11 billion in financial assistance to schools educating low-income students. ESEA allocates almost another $10 billion for teacher recruitment and professional development, educational technology, afterschool programs, and other purposes. And, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, the only federal funding source dedicated exclusively to afterschool programs, allocates funds to each State based on its share of Title I funding for low-income students. ESEA is up for reauthorization in Congress. The links between nutrition and education are well-established. This reauthorization offers an excellent opportunity to boost student achievement and performance by making targeted improvements in certain federal child nutrition programs. Specifically, FRAC recommends the following modest steps that would make a significant difference: Expand afterschool snacks and meals Link 21st Century Community Learning Centers to the nutrition programs and nutrition education Provide funding for competitive demonstration grants to support school breakfast Improve the coordination between education and the child nutrition programs (Note: The above links are all PDFs.)
